Once inside the city gate, the streets of Valletta were laid out in a grid, going either north to south or east to west. It was a planned city built upon rock and surrounded by thick walls. The harsh sun that had cast dark shadows slowly made its way across the sky. The heat baked the stones of the buildings and the streets.
