Many of the "Carnival" activities were the same from previous years but as the kids get older they aquire a different skill in the activities. Take the obstacle course for instance. Now they compete with their friends or if it is against the parents, (at least in my case) we (I) have to resort to a little creative competition and rule bending just to keep up, let alone win. Job being small kicks my but everytime even when I'm pulling his legs. He just runs through the whole thing. This year it was just Lona and Job playing the games and competing with friends. Isaac was too grown up and running around town with his friend. There are definitely favorite activities such as the tower and the obstacle course. A new one was this giant inflated pen with two inflated raised boxes. Each contestant wore some kind of headgear and was handed a spongy barbell thing. The whole goal was to knock off your opponent. Problem for me was balancing. If I took a swing or blocked a shot, I was likely to lose my balance and topple over. It was amazing how much balance I really feel like I've lost recently. Then there was the dunk tank and Job waited and waited for his leader to sit over the tank so that he could dunk him. In times past he was unable to throw hard enough to push the lever but not this year. He was able to quickly dunk his leader and do it multiple times.
I can't believe that we haven't discovered this gem of a beach before. Thor and his wife told us about this hidden gem. Thor, as Lona has named him and spread throughout the conference center until he heard that he had a nickname is a gentleman from Canada who lifts weights and sports a man bun. After getting the directions we quickly packed up the van with the bare essentials and headed toward Indian Beach and Ecola State Park. Just outside the entrance of the park is a neighborhood that we pulled into and parked the car. We walked up the road and jumped into the trees to follow a winding trail to Crescent Beach. It was like we just popped out of the rain forest onto a pristine and empty beach. I really felt like we were the only ones here. The rocks rose straight up from the sand twenty, thirty, forty feet up. We quickly tossed aside our shoes and started exploring the rocks at one end and worked our way to the other side of the beach. As we neared the other end of the beach we just needed to be aware of the bathing beauties that were hidden around the outcropping of rocks. I wish we would have discovered this cove years earlier.
One of the things that I love about our time at Cannon Beach is the people. We have met people from all over the United States. For the most part they've held our same values and beliefs. It wasn't
instantaneous and necessarily easy but friendships did happen. It happened through our kids and through seeing the same people year after year. There were times that I thought how did everyone get to be friends when they are only here for one week but as our kids became older and were able to do more on their own and we were able to do more on our own, it happened. The kids developed friendships in their classes that trickled over to us meeting the parents during the dinner hour. Slowly we started talking and laughing and sharing. Slowly we started learning a bit about them. Sometimes, they ended up living close to us, like in the same county, sometimes in the same state and sometimes not even in the same country. It has been good for us, for me to step out of my comfort zone and meet people. The meeting, saying hello, and asking questions is hard and I tend to dread it. For my youngest though, it is as natural as breathing. She walks into a room and within minutes she knows someone. Her personality just spills over and becomes contagious. Isaac on the other hand isn't like that. He has a few friends that are good friends. About five years ago he met this boy at Cannon Beach and when ever they get together they catch up and its like they've been around each other all year. They like the same things, have the same experiences, and are looking into some of the same colleges. Then there is Job, he does his own thing. If there is anyone around that wants to join him, great, if not, then that's great too. One of the things he did during the week was hang around the pool table. He became quite good for the amount of time he's been "playing" and developed a group of pool buddies. Unfortunately I didn't get a single photo of that group together. A kid would pass on the grounds and give the head nod. I'd look over at Job as he was giving the head nod back and I would ask "Who's that?" "One of my pool buddies." would come the reply from Job. Of course, I should have know.
The very first year that we visited Cannon Beach we also visited Fort Clatsop. Fort Clatsop is a replicated fort of the one Lewis and Clark built along the Oregon coast. "Fort Clatsop was really cool because they had visuals. They shot a spit wad out of musket. They showed how you prepare and arm it. They also did a reenactment involving boys from the audience, including my brother Job and showed how 6 men would escape from a bear. Also if you went outside of the fort a little bit there was a place that you could make twine out of bulrush, and we also found out that you can eat the center or a cattail." - Lona
"Fort clatsop was probably one of the most fun activity out of all that we did in Oregon. my favorite part was learning how to load and shoot a flint lock gun. it is always interesting how things work." - Job
"The best part of the Fort Clatsop visit was definitely the flintlock musket demonstration. It is cool to see how they had to do things back then. It was also surprising how small it was. Our house is probably bigger than the fort." - Isaac (Our house is smaller however we have more living space per person than they did at the fort)
