Exploring: Baker Preserve

By Leslie Parks - Saturday, June 05, 2021

The line of cars slowly inched onto the ferry as the workers indicated which lane to park in.  Encouraged to squeeze as close as possible to the car in front, we turned off our truck and put the parking brake on.  A ten minute ferry to the small island just across Hale Passage, we wouldn't even be stretching our legs as it is an open ferry.  The smooth passage ended quickly and all 20 cars and a few bikes slowly made their way off the small ferry.  the twenty years that we lived here, we have only vaguely explored the island.  We've ridden bikes here and camped.  At one time there was a lake at the top that allowed visitors to swim but no longer.  I didn't even think of there being a hike on the island since it is only about 9 square miles.  A small laid back island with a school, post office, convenience store, small library and an inn. A gas station is not to be found on the island.  Just up the road was a hidden little parking lot for the trail head to Baker Preserve.  We pulled in and eased into a parking spot.  Dappled light filtered down through the large leafed trees.  Large ferns lined the path as we started up the trail.  Spanish moss draped over tree branches as the trail twisted it's way uphill.  Once on top of the ridge we walked along until we came to the overlook.  Orcas, Sinclair, Clark and Barnes Island made their appearance as the clouds parted for a typical Pacific Northwest sky.  Grabbing a snack we sat quietly in appreciation of a little solitude and the fact that we live in a place that still provides us places to explore.  It was time to turn around and continue on to our next adventure for the day.
