Alaska: Near Island

By Leslie Parks - Saturday, August 20, 2022

After we stepped off the plane and were picked up by Job, we found ourselves crossing the bridge that connected Near Island to Kodiak, leading us directly to the parking lot for the trailhead. This marked the beginning of our coastal exploration, where the trails traced the contours of the island's picturesque shoreline.

Setting foot on the trail, we ventured forth, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty that surrounded us. The coastline unveiled its treasures gradually, inviting us to explore but hinting at the vastness that lay beyond our reach. With each step, we were treated to glimpses of rugged cliffs, gentle waves, and views of the town across the small passage.

Amidst our exploration, we engaged in conversations with Job about his work in the IT department of the Coast Guard base. We listened as he took a phone call encouraging the person to go through proper channels of creating a ticket for the problem in order to ensure the smooth operation of communication systems. It was a fascinating glimpse into his world as an IT person.

Taking brief pauses from our conversation, we gazed out at the passage that separated Near Island from Kodiak, where ferries once a day docked serving as a lifeline for transportation to and from the island.

Our curiosity led us to the enchanting world of tide pools that dotted the coastline. We knelt down, carefully peering into these miniature aquatic ecosystems, discovering a vibrant array of marine life. From colorful anemones to scuttling crabs and elusive seashells, the tide pools offered a captivating glimpse into the intricate web of life thriving in these coastal waters.

As the day wore on, the need to check into our accommodations beckoned us away from our coastal explorations. Leaving the trails and the ever-changing tides we continued on to our home away from home driving through the heart of town.

Arriving at our accommodations, we received a quick introduction to Kodiak and what to expect from the town. It is a small community with a unique blend of natural wonders and thriving fishing industry. The town offered a glimpse into the island's history, culture, and traditions, inviting us to delve deeper into the essence of Kodiak.

With anticipation in our hearts, we settled into our accommodations, excited for the adventures that awaited us in the coming days. Our brief encounter with Kodiak had already peaked our interest, and we eagerly awaited the experiences that would further unveil the island's wonders.
