Bears

One of the island's most famous residents is the mighty Kodiak Brown Bear. These magnificent creatures are the largest bears in the world, and they roam freely throughout the island's wilderness. As the salmon make their way upstream during their annual run, the bears eagerly await this bountiful feast. Observing these majestic animals in their natural habitat was an awe-inspiring experience, a testament to the harmony between nature and wildlife on the island. Before we even spotted a bear, there was evidence of their presence in the large paw prints left along the trails and the salmon carcasses along the banks.  I searched out car windows with my camera in hand hoping for a view and I was not disappointed.  Then I hoped for cubs thinking it was a long shot, but was rewarded with not one but three cubs following after their mother.

While the Kodiak Brown Bear steals the spotlight, other wildlife species also leave their mark on this island paradise. Sitka deer,  and a variety of bird species, including eagles, grace the skies and forests, adding to the rich biodiversity of the island. Though we have eagles at home, they are still a treat to view and perch majestically in the trees overlooking streams teaming with salmon.

Exploring the island's coastal areas also showcased the playful antics of sea otters as they floated on their backs eating and cracking open shells. Their presence added an element of whimsy to our journey, reminding us of the diverse marine life that thrives in the surrounding waters.
