Exploring: Acadia National Park

By Leslie Parks - Sunday, August 08, 2021

As we get ready to cross the continental United States, we stopped for a quick photo at Sand Beach and Thunder Hole, both located in Acadia National Park.  Our car was loaded with stuff from Job's almost two years in Maine and my giant beast of a suitcase.  We decided to start the journey by taking photos and selfies featuring the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast.  After standing on the sand gazing out at the vast ocean, we turned our backs on it for a selfie just as a small rogue wave came rolling along to cover our feet and splash us with water.  Laughing we jumped, running up the beach and teasing each other that we know to never turn our back on the ocean.  However, it was a fun memorable way to start a drive that would cover 3,700 miles over 10 days.  Our next stop out of town was Thunder Hole. We arrived a little before high tide and positioned ourselves for a view of the waves as they came rolling in and crashing against the back of the rock cavern with a deep clashing thunder of sound as the spray was shot upwards towards the observation point.  The loudest sound was when the water had mostly receded before violently rushing in again quickly.  The gentle ebb and flow provided a little sound but not enough to lay a claim to the name of thunder hole.  It made me want to be there during a storm.  And then it was time to start making our way across the US on a road trip that I could only dream about.
