Exploring Fort Knox

By Leslie Parks - Monday, August 09, 2021

From Southwest Harbor, we drove east along Highway 1.  The car over flowing with luggage and two years worth of belongings sped down the highway as 80s music flowed from the speakers.  Only that night's hotel was planned and the date that our trip had to end.  Everything else was wide open.  Before us lay the twisting road dotted with little towns and white Maine houses.  As we neared the Penobscot River, a large structure dominated the skyline.  So out of place in the woods and rivers of Maine. As we drove across the bridge and under the towers, we made the spur of the moment decision to check it out.  Wait Fort Knox?  I thought that was in Kentucky and it is and it's also a historical site in Maine. Grouped together with the Penobscot Observatory it made a perfect stopping point along the way. With our mask in hand we made our way to the entrance of the towers discovering that we would be riding the elevator with just us.  Standing in line, we noticed that the camera display not only showed the ground floor, the observation deck and also the the elevators.  As we stepped into the elevator a gleam came into Job's eye.  The doors shut and he began this thing that he called dancing.  It ended with him shaking his booty at the camera.  The elevator doors opened and the attendant saying nothing, just smiled at Job.  We then headed towards Fort Knox to check it out.  It was built in the mid 1800s and named after Major General Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War.  We wandered through tunnels and down dark damp stairs turning this way and that until we arrived in the center.  One side of the fort had views of the adjacent river bank and hills while the other had rooms dedicated to bunks, kitchens and officer rooms.  As in typical Job fashion, he decided to try his monkey/Tarzan yell to see if anyone would echo him back.  Nope, just him though he did get some people to stop and look around.  A visit anywhere will not be typical with him.
