An Adventure: Cape Falcon Hike

By Leslie Parks - Wednesday, August 02, 2017

We've done a hike before around Cannon Beach however I didn't realize all the hikes in the area.  I think there are around 30 something. This website did a good job breaking them up into North Coast, Middle Coast, and Southern Coast of Oregon.  We picked one that wasn't too far away, didn't have much elevation gain or loss and looked fun. I'm not in hiking shape and John's foot was getting sore being on it so much.  We pulled into the parking lot with the kids giving me grief over a whale, though that is another story.  And started off like any typical family hike.  We divided into two groups each having our own conversation, Lona and I about camera settings and John and Job discussing politics. I guess Job has graduated from talking about his "genius" idea for the summer usually involving crazy plans to something everyone can be involved in. The hike took us through an old growth forest, across a small creek and left the noise of Highway 101 behind.  We entered a world of birds, squirrels and the occasional garden snake.  Yes, of course we picked up the snake and needed to pose with it. (It stinks and is really gross but that's my opinion.)  Soon views of the ocean, sandy beach and rough rocks would peak between the trees to tease us. Then the jungle and it truly felt like a jungle of salal plants.  At one point the plants were over my head and I felt squeezed until I turned sideways and shuffled through the path. We popped out on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful view of the coast south and north. Looking over the edge made both Job and John a little queasy in the stomach.  Not Lona, she wanted to immediately stand on the very edge and look over.  Why? That's just the way she rolls.  We returned the same way we came and maybe another time, we could continue on to Arch Cape and have a shuttle. Another hike for another time.
